Internetwork Security An internetwork is a network interconnected using switches and routers. Security of internetwork is a relevant issue now-a-days. There is demand for research in AAA Security, Access Control List (ACL), Content-Based Access Control (CBAC), RADIUS, TCACS+, firewalls, Intrusion-Detection System (IDS), Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA), and security protocols such as SSL and IPSec. An important area of research in Internetwork Security is how cryptographic algorithms are used for confidentiality, integrity, and availability security assurance. Artificial Intelligence My research efforts in AI concern its intersection with information security. In particular I have used Genetic Algorithms (GA) in dynamic selection of optimal cryptographic algorithms with success1. I believe research in application of AI to internetwork security, e.g. Neural Networks (NN) in IDS and GA in dynamic selection of optimal cryptographic algorithms is exciting, fruitful, and fast emerging. Software Engineering and Algorithms I hold post-graduate certification in object-oriented methodologies. I believe there is demand for application of object-oriented design and development to various information sciences. An integral part of OOA and OOD are algorithms and optimization, where there is need for further research. High-Performance Computing and Optimization Demand for more security and energy used voice, video, and data communications has resulted in an urgent need for more research in high-performance computing and optimization. Research in high-performance computing and optimization is no longer an academic exercise. LAN & WAN Design LAN and WAN design based on a hierarchical architecture, e.g. core, distribution, and access layers, is supported by Cisco and other vendors. Because technology is fast changing and evolving, LAN & WAN design has to be based on short-term as well as long-term demands and technology forecasts. Tremendous amount of energy and time is wasted because LAN & WAN design methodologies favor the short-term needs. The academia and research institutions need to take an active role in research and development in LAN & WAN design. Voice, Video, and Data Convergence Due to the convergence of voice, video, and data over the public switched network such as the Internet, there is great demand for research in development of standards, devices, and firmware that integrate legacy and current technologies. There is growing demand for research in quality of service (QoS) ate the various layers of Open System Interconnection (OSI) reference model. Database Management The intersection of database management and security is one of my active research interests. I have an in-depth understanding of database structure and management. I have done extensive research in virtual private databases (VPDs), row-level security (RLS), and fine-grained access control2. Human-Computer Interaction HCI, human factors, ergonomics, and system usability research is another research interest I have taken an active role in. I have done active research in the role of AVI in online help3 and accelerated technical courses4.
